More blushing brides depend on parents to help pay wedding bills

More newlywed women received financial support from their parents to help cover wedding expenses, a recent survey by Recruit Co. has revealed.

The annual survey on marriage trends covered women who had their wedding and reception in fiscal 2007.

The average total of wedding expenses was 4.21 million yen -- almost the same as the previous fiscal year. "Wedding expenses" include such costs as the wedding gifts customarily exchanged among the families of the betrothed, the wedding rings, the ceremony and reception, and the honeymoon.

The average amount of financial support from parents was 1.99 million yen -- an increase of 167,000 yen from the previous fiscal year. It was the highest figure since the survey went nationwide in fiscal 2005. A record 78 percent of the respondents said they accepted financial assistance from their parents.

By age group, the survey showed that 82 percent of women aged 24 or under received monetary help from their parents, dropping slightly to 80 percent for women aged between 25 and 29. Among women in their 30s and above, some 73 percent said they received an average of 1.84 million yen in financial help from their parents. By region, three prefectures in the Hokuriku region -- Ishikawa, Toyama and Fukui -- topped the list with an average of 2.65 million yen. The amount was lowest in Hokkaido at 1.24 million yen.

"More parents are likely to help their children prepare for marriage, not only financially, but by accompanying them to bridal events at hotels and halls," a Recruit official in charge of the survey says.

The survey was conducted among 22,560 readers of Recruit's bridal magazine "Zexy," and had a response rate of 33 percent.
